Am I the only one that gets into a cab and ends up being told the driver’s deepest troubles in a matter of minutes? I was heading to the city from upstate NY and my cab driver asked me what I’d been doing on my trip, and I explained that it was a business retreat. “A business retreat? That’s amazing, what do you do?” I immediately knew what this meant. I’ve had this happen enough times where I knew we were crossing paths for a reason. “I help people learn how to live better lives,” I answered while waiting for his response that would usually get people excited to chat about my work or cement a silent trip. “Is this like mental health stuff?” He asked me this question in a way that let me know he was on the fence about “mental health”. His tone was kind, but he spoke through gritted teeth. “Yes, it’s mental health support.”
“Oh then perfect. I have something to ask you,” he declared.
I consider myself to be someone with pretty good boundaries, especially when it comes to my work. But I also believe that we all cross paths for a reason, so if I’m in your cab for 90 minutes, right at the moment where you’re wondering what to do next I know it’s not a mistake. At least I don’t believe it is.
